Milivoj Ilić, the son of Yugoslav émigrés, studied film and drama for three years at Bulmershe College, Reading, where he realised he wanted to write, direct and act.
After one year as a runner at production company Springhall and Fanthorpe, he directed his first commercial and reached the finals of a competition searching for new directing talent. His second commercial won him the Silver Creative Circle Award for Best Commercial.
While working as a director in advertising, Milivoj began writing film scripts and creating experimental video art. He exhibited internationally and licensed his work. His clients included Jonathan Ross, Paul Smith and Virgin Atlantic. He went on to co-direct and co-produce an eight-part light entertainment series for BBC Three called “Mark Owen’s Celebrity Scooters”. Passionate about his cultural roots, he directed and produced “Guča”, a music documentary funded by the British Documentary Foundation and Channel 4 about a chaotic annual Balkan brass festival set in a sleepy village in Serbia.
The experience of making “Guča” encouraged Milivoj to develop other music documentary projects and hone his screenwriting skills. His first finished feature-length script, “David”, an Escherian psychological thriller, was shortlisted for production funding by the London Film Development Fund; his second, “First Shot”, a historical drama based on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, received interest from Oscar and Palme d’Or winning producers.
Milivoj has recently collaborated with Dudley Rochelle on “Unacceptable”, a comedy series about two middle-aged men trying to find love in all the wrong places. He is also working on “Angel”, an action thriller trilogy; the first instalment is complete and has secured Milivoj a place on the BBC writers longlist.
