Sean Hinds grew up in Derry City, Northern Ireland, and studied Painting and Sculpture at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design.
A friend then asked him to help out as Director of Photography (DOP) on a shoestring-budget film, and his love affair with film began.
He won a scholarship to the London Film School and, while there, wrote and directed a 25-minute film: ‘The Fear Within’.
This caught the eye of Sid Roberson Films, kickstarting a career directing TV and film commercials. Along the way, Sean wrote and directed, "The Pan Loaf" (11 mins) for Film Four - this was shortlisted for the Cannes Short Film Palme d'Or; and he directed "Boys and Men" (40 mins) for RTE (Irish National Television) - this clinched Best Short at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
Following the success of these short films - while continuing his work in film and TV commercials - Sean progressed to writing feature-length scripts. His first feature is "Figaroo."
- "Figaroo" is a dark comedy fantasy: A hated Northern Ireland landowner, Mrs. Craig, dies and mysteriously bequeaths all her land and property, including the local village, to “Figaroo” - the village prostitute. All hell breaks loose!
This script was picked up by Simon Channing Williams (Mike Leigh's producer). When Simon sadly passed away, the option on the script lapsed and it is currently available.
Sean has since completed the script for two further features: "Irish Tales of Unforeseen Love", and, "Semi-detached".
- "Irish Tales of Unforeseen Love": After the tragic and unexpected death of his wife Rose, emotionally repressed American psychiatrist, Doctor Jim O'Neill (50’s) goes to Northern Ireland during the so-called 'Troubles' in search of his Irish ancestry - something his wife, Rose, had always wanted him to do. In a dream-like journey through a past that ultimately crashes into his present, the doctor experiences a dramatic and bittersweet revelation.
This script won development funding from Northern Ireland Screen with producer Katie Jackson attached.
- "Semi-detached": This dark psychological thriller is laced with black humour, and talks of the tragedies that can bind us. The story takes place entirely in the titular semi-detached house where 75-year-old Albert Duncan, frail and with rapidly advancing Alzheimer's, lives with his 40-year-old son, Thomas. Thomas suffers from an acute agoraphobia rendering him totally dependent on his father. He has not left the house for 35 years. The slow unravelling of how this situation came about, leads to some unsettling and shocking discoveries, building to a final conflagration of Dantean proportions. ‘Semi-detached’.
Currently, Sean is writing a new script called "Crimson Blue" - a Romeo and Juliet story set amongst the present-day London Irish mafia.
